Getting a Copy of Your Credit History Each of the major credit bureaus is bound by law to provide everyone with one free credit report every year. The 3 companies have joined together to create AnnualCreditReport.com, a website that allows U.S. residents to apply for an access their free credit report online. You will need to apply and prove your identity before access to your personal information can be granted. While federal law requires the 3 major credit bureaus to provide access to your credit report, it does not require them to tell you your credit score. However, recently TransUnion lost a class-action lawsuit after selling customer information to businesses – as a result, anyone with an open credit file between 1987 and May 25, 2008 may qualify for a free six months of credit report and credit score monitoring.
