There are 3 major credit bureaus operating in the United States – these are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Each one is bound and regulated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) along with state and federal privacy laws.

If you would like to learn more about each of these three powerhouses in the credit reporting agency, along with information on how to obtain a copy of your credit report – keep reading.

Equifax

Equifax is the largest credit bureau in the country. They operate worldwide and monitor the credit history of millions of people all over the globe. The company is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

TransUnion

TransUnion is the second largest credit reporting company. Instead of relying solely on a numerical score, TransUnion gives R1 to R9 ratings for each credit account, with R1 being the best and the highest.

Experian

Experian is the smallest of the 3 major credit bureaus when it comes to consumer credit reporting, but the largest for rating business and commercial entities. The company is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland and operates all over the world – predominantly in Europe, North and South America.

Getting a Copy of Your Credit History

Each of the major credit bureaus is bound by law to provide everyone with one free credit report every year. The 3 companies have joined together to create AnnualCreditReport.com, a website that allows U.S. residents to apply for an access their free credit report online.

You will need to apply and prove your identity before access to your personal information can be granted.

While federal law requires the 3 major credit bureaus to provide access to your credit report, it does not require them to tell you your credit score.

However, recently TransUnion lost a class-action lawsuit after selling customer information to businesses – as a result, anyone with an open credit file between 1987 and May 25, 2008 may qualify for a free six months of credit report and credit score monitoring. You can make a claim by calling 1-866-416-3470.
