Accessing Your Free Annual Credit Score Report

Custom Search

Did you know that every consumer is entitled to one free annual credit report from each of the three, major credit reporting agencies?

Did you know that monitoring your credit history is crucial for avoiding identity theft, staying on top of credit reporting mistakes and understanding your credit score?

To learn how to access your free annual credit report along with information on how to contest anything incorrectly reported in your credit history, keep reading.

How to Access Your Credit Report

Under new guidelines, the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion and Experian) have joined together to create AnnualCreditReport.com.

This website, only accessible in the United States, lets you request your free credit report from all three agencies at once.

You will need to provide proof of your identity and fill out a short questionnaire before you are granted access.

This is done in an effort to protect your privacy and personal information. Remember, you're only eligible for a free report once a year. Any additional reports must be ordered directly from the specific reporting agency.

Disputing Information on Your Credit Report

You may find incorrect information on your credit report – whether it's an out-of-date address or employer or a debt that simply doesn't belong to you. To open a dispute, you'll have to contact the reporting agency directly.

Equifax, TransUnion and Experian each have sections of their websites devoted to disputes. You will have to fill out a form, indicate your identity and describe your complaint.

At that point, the dispute will be forwarded to the pertinent debtor, allowing them to respond. Once the dispute is settled, the information will either be removed or updated.

Why You Should Access Your Credit Report

Keeping tabs on your free annual credit report will help you stay on top of possible identity fraud, mistakes on your credit report or credit problems you may not have been aware of.

If you are wrestling with an incorrect credit history and having trouble dealing with the credit reporting agencies, it may be worth hiring a lawyer.
