Personal Debt and Credit Counseling:

Swamped With Debt

The first step in improving a bad financial situation is getting help from a professional who specializes in personal debt and credit counseling.

If you have noticed that you are having a hard time paying your bills, have received numerous collection attempts from creditors, or you're worried about losing a valuable possession, you may be facing a significant financial crisis.

This financial crisis may have occurred because, like many other people, you’ve experienced family illness or perhaps even just created the problems on your own.  You don’t have to let the problem get worse, and there are steps you can take for improvement.

Developing a Budget

Your personal debt and credit counseling session will start you on the right track by helping you to develop a budget plan that works for you.

You will need to assess realistically how much money you will make in a month, and then decide how much money you need to spend.  You can begin doing this by creating a list of all sources of income, and then create a list of expenses you can’t avoid.

Obtaining an Example of Your Expenses

A fixed expense includes such areas as mortgage payments or your rent, your car payments, and any insurance premiums you currently have.

Then you can make a list of the expenses that vary from month to month, such as how much you generally spend on entertainment, recreation, and personal items.

Every expense should be written down in your budget, whether you feel it’s important or not, and a personal debt and credit counselor will help you make your budget.

This will create a helpful way for you to look at patterns with your spending and help you see which expenses are necessary. Then you can create  a list of expenses according to your overall priorities.

The goal of a budget is to make sure you can make ends meet in all the basic areas of your life, and your personal financial counseling session will help you figure out how to achieve this.

Contacting Creditors Can Be Useful

If you are finding it hard to pay your bills, contact your creditors immediately.

It’s important that you tell them why it is difficult for you to make payments to them and see if you can coordinate a payment arrangement that reduces the amount you owe. Don’t procrastinate until your accounts are sent to debt collectors.

If you wait that long, the people who have been your creditors will have given up on you; you should work hard not to let your finances get to this level.  This is something you can discuss more in depth through personal debt and credit counseling.

You don’t have to feel like you are drowning in debt.  If you get personal debt and credit counseling, you can set own mind at peace.
